Introduction
Laiku past continuous (vai progresīvo laiku [progressive]) izmanto, lai izteiktu situācijas, kas notika pagātnē un turpinājās kādu laiku kādā no laika periodiem.
Kad izteikts jautājumu [interrogative] formā, darbības vārdu izmanto, lai veidotu jautājumus pat to, kas notika pagātnes laika periodā.
Form
Laikam past continuous jautājuma formā ir sekojoša formula:
Was/Were + subject + [verb + -ing] + …?
- Was/were: past simple laika forma darbības vārdam to be.

- Ilgāka fonā notiekoša darbība tiek pārtraukta ar īsāku darbību
- Was I running in the park when you sent me that message?
- Was she doing sport when I called her?
- Were they watching TV when she got back from work?

- Was she doing sport when I called her at 11:45?
- Were they still watching TV when she returned from work at 7 o’clock?

- Was her mother working on the laptop, her father watching TV and her sister studying when she went home?
- Were the patients reading magazines, talking on the phone and was the secretary typing anything on the computer while you were waiting at the doctor today?
- Atkārtotas vai kaitinošas darbības
- Was I always going late to class?
- Was she doing sport everyday for years to become a good athlete?
- Were they always watching TV on high volume late at night?
Use
Laiku past continuous jautājuma formā izmanto, lai jautātu par notikumiem vai darbībām, kas notika pagātnē. Parasti ar nodomu parādīt to, ka tie notika ilgu laiku.
Past continuous izmanto sekojošos gadījumos:
- Ilgāka fonā notiekoša darbība tiek pārtraukta ar negaidītu īsāku darbību (kaut kas pēkšņi notiek, kamēr cits, ilgāks notikums, vēl pastāvēja);
- Notikums, kas notika precīzā laikā pagātnē (runājot par datumu, stundu vai sniedzot noteiktu informāciju par darbību, kas kādu laiku notika pagātnē);
- Nepārtraukta darbība, kas turpinās kādu laiku (pagātnes notikums, kādu laiku pēkšņi notiekošs);
- Pagātnes perioda ilgums (notikums, kas notika pagātnē ilgu laiku);
- Pagātnē notiekošās vienlaicīgas darbības (divi notikumi, kas notiek vienā laikā pagātnē);
- Pagātnes notikumu kārtība (parasti izmanto, lai aprakstītu situāciju, kurā dažādi notikumi notika vienlaikus);
- Atkārtotas vai kaitinošas darbības (lieto ar always vai līdzīgiem izteicieniem, kas norāda uz notikumu atkārtošanos).
Summary
Laiku past continuous jautājuma [interrogative] formā lieto, lai jautātu par situācijām, kas notika pagātnē un turpinājās katru brīdi noteiktajā laika periodā.
Izmantojamā formula:
Was/Were + subject + [verb + -ing] + …?
Piemēram:
— “Was I playing football when the phone rang?” = Izmantojam past continuous, lai jautātu par to, vai kaut kas bija pārtraukts, kad sāka zvanīt telefons.
♦ “Did I play football?” = Izmantojam past simple, lai jautātu par darbību, kas sākās un beidzās pagātnē.
