Introduction

Abi should un ought to pieder pie palīgdarbības vārdu grupas, tie ir modālie darbības vārdi [modal verbs], kuriem vieniem pašiem nav nozīmes, bet tie pārveido galveno darbības vārdu, mainot to nozīmi un sniedzot vairāk informācijas par darbību.

Should un ought to izmanto, lai izteiktu pienākumu ar ieteikumu un rekomendāciju palīdzību.

Form

Should un ought to vienmēr seko darbības vārds nenoteiksmē [infinitive]. Šiem vārdiem ir vienāda forma pat ar trešo personu vienskaitlī.

Apgalvojuma [affirmative] formas:

  • Should: Subject + should + infinitive + …
  • Ought to: Subject + ought to + infinitive + …

Nolieguma [negative] formas:

  • Should: Subject + should + not + infinitive + …
  • Ought to: Subject + ought + not + to + infinitive + …

Jautājuma [interrogative] formas:

  • Should: Should + subject + infinitive + …?
  • Ought to: Ought + subject + to + infinitive + …?

Example

Should

  • We should go now. / We should to go now.
  • We shouldn’t go now.
  • Should we go now?

Ought to

  • We ought to go now. / We ought go now.
  • We oughtn’t to go now.
  • Ought we to go now?

Use

Abiem šiem modāliem darbības vārdiem ir ļoti līdzīgas nozīmes un viens var aizstāt otru. Tos var uzskatīt par mazāk obligātiem, nekā must.

Savukārt, should izmanto daudz biežāk un tas tiek uzskatīts par mazāk oficiālu, nekā ought to. Ought gandrīz nekad neizmanto ar jautājuma un nolieguma formām.

Summary
