Introduction

Past Continuous (sau Progressive) [past continuous] este timpul folosit pentru a vorbi despre situații care au avut loc în trecut și erau în progres în continuu într-o perioadă de timp.

Când este exprimat în forma sa interogativă [interrogative], este folosit pentru a formula întrebări despre lucruri care aveau loc într-o perioadă de timp din trecut.

Form

Trecutul continuu, în forma sa interogativă, are această structură:
Was/Were + subject + [verb + -ing] + …?

Was/were: perfectul compus al verbului to be.

  • Were the kids playing on the grass, their parents sitting on the fence and teenagers running when you went to the park?
  • Was her mother working on the laptop, her father watching TV and her sister studying when she went home?
  • Were the patients reading magazines, talking on the phone and was the secretary typing anything on the computer while you were waiting at the doctor today?

Acțiuni repetate sau iritante

  • Was I always going late to class?
  • Was she doing sport everyday for years to become a good athlete?
  • Were they always watching TV on high volume late at night?

Use

Folosim Trecutul Continuu [past continuous], în forma interogativă [interrogative], pentru a întreba despre situații care au avut loc în trecut și care erau progres continuu pentru o perioadă de timp. De obicei, intenționăm să demonstrăm că ele au avut loc pentru o perioadă mai lungă de timp.

Past Continuous este folosit în următoarele cazuri:

  1. O acțiune de fundal mai lungă întreruptă de o altă acțiune mai scurtă (ceva are loc pe neașteptate, în timp ce un eveniment mai lung era deja în desfășurare);
  2. Un eveniment care se întâmpla într-o dată fixă în trecut (exprimând data, ora sau oferirea informației necesare despre un eveniment care a avut loc în trecut);
  3. O acțiune neîntreruptă care se afla în progres pentru o perioadă de timp (evenimente aflate în progres în trecut pentru o perioadă lungă de timp);
  4. Lungimea unei perioade de timp în trecut (eveniment în progres în trecut pentru perioadă lungă de timp);
  5. Acțiuni trecute simultane (două evenimente s-au întâmplat în același timp);
  6. Secvența acțiunilor care au avut loc în trecut (utilizate, de obicei, pentru a descrie o situație în care diverse evenimente aveau loc în același timp);
  7. Acțiuni repetate sau enervante (cu always sau expresii similare care sugerează ideea unui eveniment repetat).

Summary

Folosim Past Continuous [past continuous], în forma interogativă [interrogative], când dorim să întrebăm despre situații care au loc în trecut și erau în desfășurare continuu pentru o perioadă de timp.

Structura este:
Was/Were + subject + [verb + -ing] + …?

—„Was I playing football when the phone rang?” = folosim trecutul continuu pentru a întreba dacă ceva a fost întrerupt când telefonul a sunat.
