Introduction

Le preposizioni [Prepositions] sono brevi parole che collegano gli elementi della frase. Sono essenziali perché forniscono ulteriori dettagli alla frase.

Usiamo le preposizioni di tempo [prepositions of time] per collocare un evento in uno spazio temporale.

Form

Le preposizioni di tempo non stanno sole ma con altri elementi della frase per creare ciò che chiamiamo sintagma preposizionale: at, on, in e by.

Example

At

  • Everyday at 7.00 clock I can see the stars.
  • He is going to the forest at Easter.
  • At weekends we take the dogs for a walk.

On

  • On Sundays, I usually relax with my friends by going to the coast.
  • She was born on the 1st of September in 1997.
  • The island sank on Sunday morning.

In

  • I always travel to famous forests in Finland in November.
  • In autumn it always rains.
  • In the evening the horses started to run.

By

  • Please, send me those tickets by Monday.
  • She has to finish her world map by next week.
  • Is Maria still in the garden? Yes, she will be back by evening.

Use

Le preposizioni di tempo rendono possibile collocare un evento in un momento o periodo specifico.

At

  • Tempi esatti (the moment, sunrise, noon, night, midnight, hours);
  • Periodi di vacanza speciali (Christmas*, Eastern, etc.);
  • Weekend*.

On

  • Giorni della settimana (monday, saturday, wednesday etc.);
  • Date;
  • Parti specifiche della giornata (e.g. “on sunday morning”).

In

  • Mesi, anni, secoli;
  • Stagioni;
  • Mattina, pomeriggio, sera.

By

  • azioni con un tempo limitato;
  • progetti con una deadline;
  • lìora di ritorno di qualcuno.

*Nell’ inglese americano possiamo trovare on invece di at.

Summary

Le Preposizioni di tempo si usano per collocare un evento in un contesto temporale.
Le preposizioni di tempo maggiormente usate sono:

  • At: per momenti esatti , periodi di vacanza speciali, weekend.
  • On: giorni della settimana, date e parti specifiche della giornata.
  • In: mesi, anni, stagioni, secoli, mattina, pomeriggio, sera.
  • By: azioni con tempo limitato, progetti con deadline e l’ora di ritorno di qualcuno.

Per esempio:
— “I will go to my grandparents’ house at Christmas.”
— “I will go to my grandparents’ house on 25th of December.”
— “I will go to my grandparents’ house in December.”
— “I will return from my grandparent´s house by December.”

NOTE: Nell’inglese americano si può trovare Christmas e weekend con on invece che at.
