Introduction
Un verbe modal [modal verb] est un auxiliaire (une aide) qui n’a pas de sens propre mais qui modifie le verbe principal en changeant son sens et en donnant plus de détails sur l’action.
Le verbe would est un verbe modal [modal verb] employé pour formuler une disposition à faire quelque chose dans le passé, une demande polie, des préférences, des désirs, des offres et des invitations.

Le verbe modal would s’emploie comme auxiliaire et a trois formes :
Forme affirmative
Voici sa structure à la forme affirmative :
Sujet + would + verbe + …
- La forme contractée de would est ‘d.

Forme négative

- Sa forme contractée à la forme négative est wouldn’t.

- Would you like to come to my cousin’s party?
- Demandes polies
- Would you open the window, please? It’s hot today.
- Préférences et désirs
- I would like to have some coffee.
- Dispositions à faire quelque chose au passé
- She would stay with her grandma during the summer.
- She wouldn’t stay in the city during summer.
- Would she stay in the countryside during summer?
Use
On utilise would pour exprimer :
- Une proposition ou une invitation : proposer quelque chose ou inviter quelqu’un ;
- Une demande polie ;
- Une préférence ou un désir ;
- La disposition à faire quelque chose dans le passé.
Summary
Le verbe modal [modal verb] would permet de formuler des propositions et des invitations, des demandes polies, des préférences, des désirs et une disposition à faire quelque chose dans le passé.
On l’emploie sous différentes formes :
- Affirmative : On met d’abord le sujet suivi de would puis le verbe.
- Négative : On met d’abord le sujet suivi de would not puis le verbe.
- Interrogative : On met d’abord would suivi du sujet et du verbe (la phrase se termine par un point d’interrogation).
Par exemple :
— Affirmatif : « She would play the piano. »
— Négatif : « She wouldn’t play the piano. »
— Interrogatif : « Would she play the piano? »
NOTE : La forme reste toujours la même, même à la troisième personne du singulier.
