Introduction
There is/are est une expression employée dans les phrases qui veulent confirmer, nier ou assurer que quelque chose existe.
Form
Le sujet de There is/are se place après le verbe. L’expression existe sous trois formes :
Forme affirmative
Avec un nom singulier : There is + nom singulier/indénombrable + …
Avec un nom pluriel : There are + nom pluriel + …
Forme négative
Avec un nom singulier : There is + not + nom singulier/indénombrable + …
Avec un nom pluriel : There are + not + nom pluriel + …
Les formes négatives contractées sont : there isn’t/aren’t (les mêmes que celles de to be)
D’autres formes négatives courantes sont :
- there are no / there are not any
- there aren’t / there aren’t any
Forme interrogative
Avec un nom singulier : Is there + nom singulier/indénombrable + …?
Avec un nom pluriel : Are there + nom pluriel + …?
Example
There is
- There is a cat in the garden.
- There is no cat in the garden.
- There is not a cat in the garden.
- There isn’t a cat in the garden.
- Is there a cat in the garden?
There are
- There are ten cats in the garden.
- There are not ten cats in the garden.
- There aren’t ten cats in the garden.
- Are there ten cats in the garden?
- There are not any cats in the garden.
Use
On utilise There is/are comme expression lorsque l’on veut confirmer, nier ou s’informer sur l’existence d’une chose.
Summary
There is (pour le singulier) and there are (pour le pluriel) sont utilisés quand on veut confirmer (affirmatif), nier (négatif) ou s’informer (interrogatif) sur l’existence ou la présence d’une chose.
Par exemple :
— Affirmatif : « There is a white plate. » / « There are white plates. »
— Négatif : « There isn’t a white plate. » / « There aren’t white plates. »
— Interrogatif : « Is there a white plate?« / « Are there white plates?«
Les négations les plus courantes sont there is no et there are no.
Par exemple :
— « There is no plate on the table. » / « There are no plates on the table. »
NOTE : Une autre négation souvent utilisée est there are not any.
