Introduction
There is/are là các biểu thức được sử dụng trong các câu muốn xác nhận, từ chối hoặc kiểm tra xem có gì đó tồn tại hay không.
Form
There is/are có chủ ngữ sau động từ và chúng ta thường tìm thấy chúng ở ba dạng:
Khẳng định
Danh từ số ít [singular nouns]: There is + singular noun/uncountable noun + …
Danh từ số nhiều [plural nouns]: There are + plural noun + …
Phủ định
Danh từ số ít [singular nouns]: There is + not + singular noun/uncountable noun + …
Danh từ số nhiều [plural nouns]: There are + not + plural noun + …
Dạng rút gọn: there isn’t/aren’t (tương tự như dạng rút gọn của động từ to be).
Một số cách viết phổ biến hơn là:
- there are no / there are not any;
- there aren’t / there aren’t any.
Nghi vấn
Danh từ số ít [singular nouns]: Is there + singular noun/uncountable noun + …?
Danh từ số nhiều [plural nouns]: Are there + plural noun + …?
Example
There is
- There is a cat in the garden.
- There is not a cat in the garden.
- There isn’t a cat in the garden.
- Is there a cat in the garden?
There are
- There are ten cats in the garden.
- There are not ten cats in the garden.
- There aren’t ten cats in the garden.
- Are there ten cats in the garden?
- There are not any cats in the garden.
Use
Chúng ta sử dụng There is/are như một biểu thức khi chúng ta xác nhận, từ chối hoặc kiểm tra xem có cái gì đó tồn tại hay không.
Summary
There is (dành cho số ít) và there are (dành cho số nhiều) được sử dụng khi chúng ta xác nhận [affirmative], từ chối [negative] hoặc kiểm tra [interrogative] xem cái gì đó có tồn tại hay không.
Ví dụ:
— Khẳng định: “There is a white plate.” / “There are white plates.”
— Phủ định: “There isn’t a white plate.” / “There aren’t white plates.”
— Nghi vấn: “Is there a white plate?“ / “Are there white plates?“
Cấu trúc thường xuyên được sử dụng ở dạng phủ định là there is no và there are no.
Ví dụ:
— “There is no plate on the table.” / “There are no plates on the table.”
LƯU Ý: Một hình thức khác của phủ định thường được sử dụng là there are not any.
