Introduction

There is/are sono delle espressioni usate per confermare, negare o domandare l’esistenza di qualcosa.

Form

There is/are hanno il soggetto dopo il verbo e in genere ci sono tre strutture:

Affermativa

Nomi singolari: There is + singular noun/uncountable noun + …
Nomi plurali: There are + plural noun + …

Negativa

Nomi singolari: There is + not + singular noun/uncountable noun + …
Nomi plurali: There are + not + plural noun + …

Le forme brevi negative sono: there isn’t/aren’t (le stesse del verbo to be).

Un’espressione negativa più comune è there are no/there aren’t or there are not any/there aren’t any.

Interrogativa

Nomi singolari: Is there + singular noun/uncountable noun + …?
Nomi plurali: Are there + plural noun + …?

Example

There is

  • There is a cat in the garden.
  • There is not a cat in the garden.
  • There isn’t a cat in the garden.
  • Is there a cat in the garden?

There are

  • There are ten cats in the garden.
  • There are not ten cats in the garden.
  • There aren’t ten cats in the garden.
  • Are there ten cats in the garden?
  • There are not any cats in the garden.

Use

There is/are sono espressioni usate per confermare, negare o domandare se qualcosa esiste.

Summary

There is/are vengono utilizzate quando vogliamo confermare (frase affermativa), negare (frase negativa) o domandare (frase interrogativa), l’esistenza di qualcosa.

  • Singolare: there is
  • Plurale: there are

Per esempio:
— Frase affermativa:”There is a plate on the table”. /”There are plates on the table.”
— Frase negativa: “There isn’t a plate on the table”. /”There aren’t plates on the table.”
— Frase interrogativa: “Is there a plate on the table? /”Are there plates on the table?”

Le espressioni negative più comuni sono there is no/there are no.

Per esmpio:
— “There is no plate on the table.” / “There are no plates on the table”.

NOTE: un’altra espressione negativa comune è there are not any.
