Introduction

Un verbo modale [modal verb] è un verbo ausiliare che non ha significato da solo, ma modifica (aiuta) il verbo principale, cambiandone il significato e aggiungendo più dettagli all’azione.

Il verbo can è un verbo modale usato per esprimere l’idea di abilità o opportunità, per parlare della possibilità o impossibilità di un evento o azione e per chiedere o dare permessi.

Form

Il verbo modale can viene usato come verbo ausiliare e presenta le seguenti tre forme:

Affermativa

La forma affermativa ha questa struttura:
Subject + can + verb + …

Subject can Verb
I can work
You can work
He can work
She can work
It can work
We can work
You can work
They can work

Negativa

La forma negativa ha questa struttura:
Subject + cannot + verb + …

  • La forma breve della forma negativa è can’t;
  • Can fa eccezione nella forma negativa e si scrive in un’unica parola aggiuggendo not: cannot (can not non è corretto)

Interrogativa

La forma interrogativa ha questa struttura:
Can + subject + verb + …?

Example

  1. Capacità
    • She can play the piano.
    • She cannot play the piano.
    • Can she play the piano?
  2. Verità generali
    • Parks can be dangerous.
  3. Offerta
    • Can we help you and your husband?
  4. Opportunità
    • We can stay at his place for a week!
  5. Permesso
    • My children can go to the party.
    • My children cannot go to the party.
  6. Possibilità
    • My wife can go to Milan this summer.
  7. Rimprovero
    • Can’t you just tell him your marital status?
  8. Richiesta
    • Can you write down your telephone number, please?

Use

Usiamo can quando parliamo di:

  1. Capacità: essere capaci di fare qualcosa;
  2. Offerte: per fare delle offerte;
  3. Rechieste: fare delle richieste;
  4. Possibilità: per parlare di situazioni possibili da realizzare;
  5. Opportunità: per esprimere l’opportunità di fare qualcosa;
  6. Permessi: chiedere o dare il permesso;
  7. Rimprovero: rimproverare qualcuno;
  8. Verità generali: parlare di cose genereli che sono vere.

Summary

Usiamo il verbo modale can [modal verb can] per esprimere l’idea di capacità, offerta, rihiesta, possibilità, opportunità, permesso, disapprovazione e verità generali.

Le strutture sono:

  • Affermativa: Subject + can + verb + …
  • Negativa: Subject + cannot + verb + …
  • Interrogativa: Can + subject + verb + …?

Per esempio:
— Affermativa: “She can play the piano.”
— Negativa: “She can’t play the piano.”
— Interrogativa: “Can she play the piano?

NOTE: La forma è sempre la stessa anche per la terza persona singolare.
