Introduction

I comparativi [comparatives] si usano per comparare due cose, persone o azioni, mentre i superlativi [superlatives] esprimono la superiorità di una cosa, una persona o un’azione.

Ci sono alcuni aggettivi e avverbi che hanno il comparativo e il superlativo irregolare [irregular comparatives and superlatives].

Form

I comparativi e i superlativi irregolari non seguno delle regole ben precise. Quelli piú comuni sono:

bad (adj.) badly (adv.) worse the worst
little little less the least
much much more the most
good (adj.) well (adv.) better the best
far far farther/further the farthest/furthest

Example

Comparative

  • Susan is a better assistant than her sister.
  • You have to go further to get to the lawyer’s office.
  • Peter is going to talk to him later about the house.

Superlative

  • John is the best assistant in the office.
  • This is the furthest point I’ve ever reached in the agency!
  • They come the latest to the garage.

Use

I comparativi e i superlativi irregolari si usano nella stessa maniera di quelli regolari.

I comparativi e i superlativi degli aggettivi/ avverbi irregolari [comparative and superlative forms of irregular adjectives/adverbs] non si formano allo stesso modo di quelli regolari, pertanto devono essere imparati a memoria. Quelli piú comunemente usati sono:

  • Bad (adj.) – badly (adv.) ⇒ worse (comp.) – the worst (super.);
  • Good (adj.) – well (adv.) ⇒ better (comp.) – the best (super.).

Per esempio:
— Comparativo: “You can write a good CV.” ⇒ “You can write a better CV.” / “You can write a gooder CV.
— Superlativo: “You can write a good CV.” ⇒ “You can write the best CV.” / “You can write the goodest CV.
