Introduction

Il presente progressivo [present continuous] è un tempo verbale usato per parlare di situazioni che accadono nel presente (prima, durante e dopo il momento in cui se ne sta parlando).

Espresso in forma affermativa, il verbo conferma che qualcosa sta accadendo nel momento in cui ne parliamo.

Form

Il presente progressivo, nella forma affermativa, ha la seguente struttura:
Subject + to be + [verb + -ing] + …

Regolare

Forma del verbo: verb + -ing.

La forma breve affermativa è la stessa del verbo to be (nella lingua parlata o negli scritti informali): I’m – you’re – he’s…

Eccezione

  • I verbi con suffisso -e: perdono la -e ed aggiungono -ing.
Infinitive Verb + -ing

  • I verbi che terminano con una consonante dopo vocale, che hanno l’ultima sillaba accentata e terminano in -l: raddoppiano la consonante.
Infinitive Verb + -ing
sit sitting
begin beginning

  • I verbi con suffisso: -ie: perdono -ie: e aggiungono -ying.
Infinitive Verb + -ing
die dying
lie lying
tie tying

Example

  1. Mentre se ne parla
    • We’re doing our homework.
    • She is watching TV at the moment.
    • I‘m using the dictionary. 
  2. Azioni pianificate
    • am fixing the shelves tonight.
    • He is buying a computer at the weekend.
    • We are repeating the class next week. 
  3. Cambiamenti e tendenze
    • am getting happier and happier.
    • am becoming better at sitting exams. 
    • The teacher is improving her classes every day.
  4. Consistenza degli eventi
    • I‘m always doing homework. 
    • The student is asking questions repeatedly. 
    • am always photocopying worksheets for you! 
  5. Azioni temporanee
    • He’s looking for the map. 
    • I’m buying some pens.
    • The classmates are working in groups.

Use

Usiamo il presente progressivo, nella forma affermativa, per parlare di:

  1. Azioni che accadono nel momento in cui se ne parla;
  2. Azioni temporanee (che termineranno nel futuro);
  3. Azioni pianificate per il futuro;
  4. Cambiamenti e tendenze;
  5. Consistenza degli eventi.

Summary

Il presente progressivo [present continuous], nella forma affermativa, viene usato per parlare di situazioni che accadono durante il momento in cui se ne sta parlando.

La struttura è:
Subject + to be + [verb + -ing] + …

Per esempio:
— “He is working on an important project today.” = usiamo il presente progressivo perché stiamo parlando di un’azione che si verifica mentre ne stiamo parlando (in quel momento).
♦ “He works on important projects.” = In questo caso usiamo il presente indicativo [present simple] perché stiamo parlando di un’azione che si verifica ripetutamente o sempre nel presente.

Ci sono delle Eccezione, a seconda della terminazione del verbo.

Per esempio:
— Il suffisso -e: perde la -e aggiunge -ing. “Shake” ⇒ “Shaking.”
Consonante seguita da vocale, verbi con l’accento sull’ultima sillaba e verbi che terminano in -l: raddoppiano la consonante. “Put“ ⇒ “Putting.”
— Il suffisso -ie: perde -ie e aggiunge -ying: “Tie“ ⇒ “Tying.”
