Introduction
I pronomi [pronouns] sono parole usate per evitare la ripetizione di un sostantivo.
I pronomi relativi [relative pronouns] si usano per introdurre una frase relativa.
Form
I pronomi relativi si riferiscono a persone o cose sostituendo il soggetto espresso nella proposizione principale per evitare la ripetizione nella frase relativa.
I principali pronomi relativi sono: which, who e that.
Example
Which
- We are waiting at the bus stop, which is near the supermarket.
- She is an air hostess for the airline which Mary works for.
- We are going on a train which has free internet.
Who
- I am the one who parked the car.
- He is the man who went by foot.
- They are the men who carried out suitcases.
That
- I bought the mobile phone that you told me about.
- The ship that I went on yesterday was great.
- These are the streets that were designed by my friend.

Which e that si usano per aggiungere informazioni secondarie/aggiuntive. Which puó essere usato per evitare la ripetizione di that (a volte quest’ultimo puó essere omesso).

I pronomi relativi [relative pronouns] si usano per introdurre le frasi relative. Si riferiscono a persone o cose sostituendosi al soggetto, espresso nella principale, in modo da evitare che venga ripetuto nella relativa.
Essi sono: which, who e that.
Per esempio:
— “This is the restaurant which has an Italian menu.” = Which si riferisce alle cose.
— “The man who owns this restaurant is Italian.” = Who si riferisce alle persone.
— “The man that owns this restaurant is Italian.” / “This is the restaurant that has an Italian menu.” = That si può riferire sia a persone ché a cose.
