Introduction
I numeri ordinali [ordinal numbers] esprimono sequenze numeriche, posizionando degli elementi in una lista.
Form
I numeri ordinali generalmente sono preceduti dall’articolo determinativo the e si posizionano dopo il verbo. I numeri ordinali si formano aggiungendo -th* ai numeri cardinali (1-10):
- 1st* – First
- 2nd* – Second
- 3rd* – Third
- 4th – Fourth
- 5th* – Fifth
- 6th – Sixth
- 7th – Seventh
- 8th* – Eighth
- 9th* – Ninth
- 10th – Tenth
*Le eccezioni (anche twelve = twelfth).
Example
- He was the first on the list./ He was the 1st on the list.
- It’s my second time in Sweden. / It’s my 2nd time in Sweden.
- I want the third cake. / I want the 3rd cake.
Use
I numeri ordinali si usano anche per parlare della posizione di qualcosa in un determinato contesto.
A differenza dei numeri cardinali, che sono usati per esprimere la quantitá di qualcosa, questi si usano per esprimere sequenze numeriche.

I numeri ordinali [ordinal numbers] differiscono dai numeri cardinali [cardinal numbers] dato che vengono usati per posizionare degli elementi in una lista.
I numeri ordinali si formano aggiungendo -th ai numeri cardinali: first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth e tenth.
Per esempio:
— “It’s my fifth time in Spain.” = indica che questa é la mia quinta volta che sono in Spagna (fifth = numero ordinale).
♦”I’ve been to Spain five times.”=il numero totale delle volte che sono stato in Spagna (five = numero cardinale).
NOTE: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9 e 12 fanno eccezione (visto che i loro numeri ordinali non seguono la regola generale della formazione: first, second, third, fifth, eighth, ninth e twelfth).
