Introduction
Il passato semplice [past simple] è il tempo verbale usato per parlare di situazioni, eventi ed azioni che hanno avuto luogo nel passato.
Usato in forma negativa [negative form], il verbo nega qualcosa del soggetto.
Form
Il passato semplice dei verbi sia regolari ché irregolari* alla forma negativa ha questa struttura:
Subject + did + not + verb + …
- Did é la forma al passato del verbo do.
- La forma breve negativa é didn’t.

*La forma interrogativa e negativa dei verbi irregolari hanno la stessa struttura dei verbi regolari.
Example
- I didn’t plant some trees yesterday.
- I didn’t study about plants for the exams.
- The school didn’t decide that all students should do exercise.
- They didn’t travel all over the place.
Use
Usiamo il passato semplice, nella forma negativa, per parlare di:
- Azioni brevi ed eventi finiti che non si sono verificati;
- Situazioni a lunga durata finite che non si sono verificate;
- Eventi ed abitudini ripetute che nel passato non hanno avuto luogo;
- Eventi passati che non si sono verificati e li raccontiamo usando espressioni come: two weeks ago, last year, in 2010, yesterday…
Summary
Usiamo il passato semplice [past simple], nella forma negativa [negative form], quando vogliamo parlare di situazioni accadute nel passato che sono terminate.
La struttura é:
Subject + did + not + verb + …
Per esempio:
— “They didn’t work on an important project yesterday.” = Usiamo il passato semplice per parlare di un evento passato che non è accaduto.
