Introduction
Il genitivo sassone [possessive case] si usa per parlare di cose che appartengono ad una persona o ad un animale. Possiamo anche usarlo per far notare che una cosa appartiene ad un’altra cosa.
Form
Il genitivo sassone si forma in tre modi:
- Per il singolare aggiungiamo un apostrofo ed una s (‘s) ai sostantivi singolari: cat ⇒ cat‘s;
- Per il plurale aggiungiamo un apostrofo (‘) ai sostantivi plurali regolari: cats ⇒ cats’;
- Per i plurali irregolari aggiungiamo un apostrofo ed una s (‘s) ai sostantivi plurali irregolari: people ⇒ people‘s.
Example
Singular:
- This is my sister‘s room (one sister).
- You can find my friend‘s number here (one friend).
Plural:
- This is my sisters’ room (two sisters or more).
- You can find my friends’ numbers here (two friends or more).
Irregular plural:
- These children‘s mobile phones are missing (two children or more).
- She took these women‘s phone numbers (two women or more).
Use
Il genitivo sassone è usato per parlare delle cose che appartengono ad una persona o un animale, ma si usa per esprimere anche le relazioni e le caratteristiche fisiche del soggetto.

Per esempio:
— Nomi singolari: “The cat‘s ball is on the sofa.” = la palla appartiene ad un gatto, quindi aggiungiamo (-‘s).
— Nomi plurali:”The cats‘ ball is on the sofa.” = la palla appartiene a più di un gatto, quindi aggiungiamo (‘).
— Nomi plurali irregolari: “The children‘s ball is on the sofa.” = Children è un plurale irregolare e quindi aggiungiamo (-‘s).
