Introduction
Les nombres ordinaux [ordinal numbers] permettent de ranger des éléments dans un ordre séquentiel et de les classer en liste.
Form
La plupart du temps, les nombres ordinaux sont précédés de l’article défini the et sont généralement placés après un verbe.
Les nombres ordinaux sont formés par l’ajout de -th aux nombres cardinaux (1-10) :
- 1st* – First
- 2nd* – Second
- 3rd* – Third
- 4th – Fourth
- 5th* – Fifth
- 6th – Sixth
- 7th – Seventh
- 8th* – Eighth
- 9th* – Ninth
- 10th – Tenth
*Exceptions (avec 12 twelve = twelfth).
Example
- He was the first on the list. / He was the 1st on the list.
- It’s my second time in Sweden. / It’s my 2nd time in Sweden.
- I want the third cake. / I want the 3rd cake.
Use
Les nombres ordinaux sont utilisés pour positionner des éléments dans un ordre séquentiel, contrairement aux nombres cardinaux qui expriment la quantité.

On forme les nombres ordinaux en ajoutant -th à la fin des nombres cardinaux : first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth et tenth.
Par exemple :
— « It’s my fifth time in Spain. » = Il s’agit du nombre actuel de mes voyages en Espagne et j’y suis au moment où je parle (fifth = nombre ordinal).
♦ « I’ve been to Spain five times. » = Il s’agit du nombre total de mes voyages en Espagne et je n’y suis plus au moment où je parle (five = nombre cardinal).
NOTE : 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9 et 12 sont des exceptions (la formation de ces nombres ordinaux ne suit pas la règle générale : first, second, third, fifth, eighth, ninth et twelfth).
