Les déterminant quantitatifs se placent devant le nom pour en indiquer la quantité ou le montant.
Les principaux quantitatifs sont :
- Devant un nom dénombrable : both, many, (a) few…
- Devant un indénombrable : some, much, (a) little…
Example
Les noms dénombrables
- Were there only a few people at work?
- There are shops on both sides of the street.
- So many people visit London in winter.
Les noms indénombrables
- How little sugar is left?
- We do not have much time.
- Do you want some milk in your tea?
Use
On utilise les déterminants quantitatifs avec les noms dénombrables et indénombrables pour en indiquer la quantité.
Les noms dénombrables
- (A) few = Une petite quantité de quelque chose ;
- Both = Les deux parties de quelque chose ;
- Many = Une grande quantité d’objets distincts.
Les noms indénombrables
- (A) little = Une petite quantité de quelque chose ;
- Much = Une grande quantité d’une masse ;
- Some = Une quantité importante mais indéfinie de quelque chose.
Summary
Les déterminants quantitatifs [quantitative determiners] sont employés pour indiquer le montant ou la quantité de quelque chose. On utilise des déterminants quantitatifs différents avec les noms dénombrables et indénombrables.
- Avec les noms dénombrables on emploie les déterminants (a) few, both, many…
- Avec les noms indénombrables on emploie les déterminants (a) little, some, much…
Par exemple :
— Dénombrable : « Can you buy a few coffees at the bar? » = Coffees fait référence à des tasses de café.
— Indénombrable : « Can you buy some coffee at the supermarket? » = Coffee fait référence à du café en poudre.
Coffee peut être à la fois dénombrable et indénombrable, avec une différence de sens.
