Introduction

There is/are zerbait badagoela baieztatu, ukatu edo egiaztatu nahi duten esaldietan erabiltzen diren espresioak dira.

Form

There is/are subjektua aditzaren ondoren doaz eta normalean hirugarren forman aurkitzen ditugu:

Affirmative

Substantibo singularrak: There is + singular noun/uncountable noun + …
Substantibo pluralak: There are + plural noun + …

Negative

Substantibo singularrak: There is + not + singular noun/uncountable noun + …
Substantibo pluralak: There are + not + plural noun + …

Negatiboentzako forma laburtuak hurrenguak dira: there isn’t/aren’t (to be-ren forma laburtuaren berdinak).

Gehien erabiltzen diren beste espresio negatiboak hurrengoak dira:

  • there are no there are not any;
  • there aren’t / there aren’t any.

Interrogative

Substantibo singularrak: Is there + singular noun/uncountable noun + …?
Substantibo pluralak: Are there + plural noun + …?

Example

There is

  • There is a cat in the garden.
  • There is not a cat in the garden.
  • There isn’t a cat in the garden.
  • Is there a cat in the garden?

There are

  • There are ten cats in the garden.
  • There are not ten cats in the garden.
  • There aren’t ten cats in the garden.
  • Are there ten cats in the garden?
  • There are not any cats in the garden.

Use

There is/are espresioak erabiltzen ditugu zerbait existitzen dela baieztatu, ezeztatu edo galdetu nahi dugunean.

Summary

There is (singularrean) eta there are (pluralean) zerbait existitzen dela baieztatu (baiezkoak), ezeztatu (ezezkoak) edo galdetu (galderak) nahi denean erabiltzen dira.

Adibidez:
— Baiezko: “There is a white plate.” / “There are white plates.”
— Ezezko: “There isn’t a white plate.” / “There aren’t white plates.”
— Galdera: “Is there a white plate? / “Are there white plates?

Gehien erabiltzen diren beste espresio negatiboak, there is no eta there are no dira.

Adibidez:
— “There is no plate on the table.” / “There are no plates on the table.”

OHARRAK: Asko erabiltzen den beste espresio negatibo bat there are not any da.
