Introduction

There is/are son expresiones usadas en oraciones que quieren confirmar, negar o comprobar que algo existe.

Form

There is/are tienen el sujeto después del verbo y normalmente los encontramos en sus tres formas:

Afirmativo

Sustantivos singulares: There is + singular noun/uncountable noun + …
Sustantivos plurales: There are + plural noun + …

Negativo

Sustantivos singulares: There is + not + singular noun/uncountable noun + …
Sustantivos plurales: There are + not + plural noun + …

Las formas abreviadas negativas son: there isn’t/aren’t (las mismas formas abreviadas de to be).

Algunas expresiones negativas más comunes son:

  • there are no / there are not any;
  • there aren’t / there aren’t any.

Interrogativo

Sustantivos singulares: Is there + singular noun/uncountable noun + …?
Sustantivos plurales: Are there + plural noun + …?

Example

There is

  • There is a cat in the garden.
  • There is not a cat in the garden.
  • There isn’t a cat in the garden.
  • Is there a cat in the garden?

There are

  • There are ten cats in the garden.
  • There are not ten cats in the garden.
  • There aren’t ten cats in the garden.
  • Are there ten cats in the garden?
  • There are not any cats in the garden.

Use

There is/are son expresiones que se usan en oraciones para confirmar, negar o comprobar que algo existe.

Summary

 There is (singular) y there are (plural)  se usan cuando queremos confirmar, (afirmativo), negar (negativo) o comprobar (interrogativo) que algo existe.

Por ejemplo:
— Afirmativo: «There is a plate on the table.» / «There are plates on the table
— Negativo: «There isn’t a plate on the table.» / «There aren’t plates on the table
— Interrogativo: «Is there a plate on the table?» / «Are there plates on the table

Las formas negativas más comunes son there is no y there are no.

Por ejemplo:
— «There is no plate on the table.» / «There are no plates on the table

NOTA:  Otra forma negativa común es there are not any.
