Introduction

Los artículos [articles] son palabras que definen sustantivos y pertenecen al grupo de palabras llamado determinantes [determiners]. Básicamente hay dos tipos de artículos: indeterminados [indefinite] y determinados [definite].

Usamos el artículo determinado [definite article] para hacer referencia a cosas específicas.

Form

El artículo determinado se coloca normalmente antes de sustantivos singulares y plurales, frases nominales y adjetivos.

Solo hay un artículo determinado que usamos antes de sustantivos: the.

Example

  1. Países con las palabras siguientes en sus nombres: kingdom, republic o states
    • The United KingdomThe Czech RepublicThe United States.
  2. Nombres de países en plural
    • The Netherlands.
  3. Lugares definidos, edificios, transportes, servicios
    • The train station is next to my house.
    • The shop will be closed tomorrow.
    • The bus leaves in five minutes.
    • Every day I listen to the radio.
  4. Nombres de familias en plural
    • The Jacksons lived in Texas for 10 years.
  5. Periódicos
    • The New York Times.
  6. Cordilleras, océanos, ríos y grupos de islas
    • The AlpsThe Pacific OceanThe NileThe Azores.
  7. Instrumentos musicales
    • I play the piano.
  8. Adjetivos superlativos
    • Pizza is the most delicious food in the world!
  9. La única cosa que existe
    • The Pope is visiting Germany next week.
  10. Cosas mencionadas previamente
    • There is a dog in your garden. The dog is hungry.

Use

Usamos el artículo determinado para referirnos a cosas específicas que ya conocen el hablante y el interlocutor.

Usamos el artículo determinado cuando nos referimos a:

  1. Países con las palabras siguientes en sus nombres: kingdom, republic o states;
  2. Nombres de países en plural;
  3. Lugares concretos, edificios, transportes, servicios;
  4. Nombres de familias en plural;
  5. Cordilleras, océanos, ríos y grupos de islas;
  6. Instrumentos musicales;
  7. Periódicos;
  8. Adjetivos superlativos;
  9. La única cosa que existe (the Sun, the Moon, the sky…);
  10. Cosas mencionadas previamente (para evitar repeticiones).

Summary

El artículo determinado [definite article] the es un determinante [determiner] usado para referirse a una cosa específica. Se coloca antes de sustantivos singulares y plurales, frases nominales o adjetivos.

Por ejemplo:
— «I think the dog is hungry.» = Usamos the para referirnos a un perro específico.

♦ «There is a dog in your garden.» = Usamos a/an para referirnos a un perro no específico.
