Introduction

Un verbo modal [modal verb] es un tipo de verbo auxiliar que no tiene significado por sí solo pero modifica el verbo principal, cambia su significado y da más detalles sobre la acción.

El verbo would es un verbo modal que se usa para expresar la voluntad en el pasado, petición cortés, preferencias/deseos, proposiciones e invitaciones.

Form

El verbo modal would se usa como verbo auxiliar y tiene tres formas.

Affirmative

Su estructura en su forma afirmativa es:
Subject + would + verb + …

  • La abreviación en la forma afirmativa de would es ‘d.

I would work
You would work
He would work
She would work
It would work
We would work
You would work
They would work

Negative

Su estructura en la forma negativa es:

Subject + would + not + verb + …

  • La abreviación de la forma negativa es wouldn’t.
SUBJECT WOULD+NOT VERB

Interrogative

Su estructura en la forma interrogativa es:
Would + subject + verb + …?

Example

  1. Proposiciones e invitaciones
    • Would you like to come to my cousin’s party?
  2. Petición cortés
    • Would you open the window, pleaseIt’s hot today.
  3. Preferencias/deseos
    • I would like to have some coffee.
  4. Voluntad en el pasado
    • She would stay with her Grandma during the summer. 
    • She wouldn’t stay in the city during summer.
    • Would she stay in the countryside during summer?

Use

Usamos would para expresar:

  1. Proposiciones e invitaciones: hacer una proposición o invitar a alguien;
  2. Petición cortés: pedir algo de forma educada;
  3. Preferencias/deseos: hablar de preferencias y deseos;
  4. Voluntad en el pasado: ser capaz de hacer algo en el pasado.

Summary

El verbo modal would expresa voluntad en el pasado, petición cortés, preferencias/deseos, proposiciones e invitaciones.

Podemos usarlo en diferentes formas:

  • Afirmativo: Empezamos con el sujeto seguido por would y el verbo. Subject + would + verb + …
  • Negativo: Empezamos con el sujeto seguido por would not y el verbo. Subject + would + not + verb + …
  • Interrogativo: Empezamos con would seguido por el sujeto y el verbo (la oración termina con un signo de interrogación). Would + subject + verb + …?

Por ejemplo:
— Afirmativo: «She would play the piano
— Negativo: «She wouldn’t play the piano
— Interrogativo: «Would she play the piano?»

NOTA: La forma siempre es la misma, incluso en la tercera pesona del singular.
