Introduction

  • Masculino, femenino y neutro;
  • Masculino y femenino;
  • Neutro.
Masculine Femenine Neutral
boy girl child
father mother parent
husband wife spouse
man woman person
sir madame
son daughter
uncle aunt
dog
dolphin
table

Normalmente usamos he (masculino) y she (femenino) para personas.

Example

Palabras con forma masculina, femenina y neutra:

  • Our boy likes football. He plays it every day.
  • Our girl likes football. She plays it every day.
  • Our child likes football. They* play it every day.

*Si no queremos revelar el genero.

Palabras con forma masculina y femenina:

  • My uncle doesn’t eat meat. He is a vegetarian.
  • My aunt doesn’t eat meat. She is a vegetarian.

Palabras con solo forma neutra:

  • The bill is 100 euros. It is expensive.
  • The email address is there. It is quite long.
  • His mobile phone has broken. We can fix it in the morning.

Use

Summary

Los sustantivos [nouns] tienen tres géneros: masculino, femenino y neutro.

Normalmente usamos he y she para personas, sin embargo usamos it para cosas y animales (podemos usar he o she para animales domésticos).

Por ejemplo:
— «My father doesn’t eat meat. He is a vegetarian.» = Usamos he porque father es masculino.
— «My mother doesn’t eat meat. She is a vegetarian.» =  Usamos she porque mother es femenino.
— «My parents don’t eat meat. They are vegetarian.»
— «The cat sleeps during the day. It is so cute.» / «The female cat sleeps during the day. She is so cute.»
