Introduction
Imenice [nouns] se odnose na osobu, mjesto, stvar, događaj, tvar ili pojavu.
Imenice imaju tri roda [genders]: muški, ženski i srednji.
Form
Neke imenice mogu imati različite oblike rodova:
- Muški, ženski i srednji rod;
- Muški i ženski rod;
- Srednji rod.

*Neke neutralne imenice možemo razlikovati po rodu dodavanjem riječi ženski ili muški.
Obično koristimo he (muški rod) i she (ženski rod) za ljude, dok it (srednji rod) koristimo za stvari i životinje (osim kod kućnih ljubimaca i domaćih životinja za koje se smatra da posjeduju određeni stupanj inteligencije te imaju osjećaje; gdje možemo koristiti he ili she).
Example
Imenice s muškim, ženskim i srednjim rodom:
- Our boy likes football. He plays it every day.
- Our girl likes football. She plays it every day.
- Our child likes football. They* play it every day.
Imenice s muškim i ženskim rodom:
- My uncle doesn’t eat meat. He is a vegetarian.
- My aunt doesn’t eat meat. She is a vegetarian.
Imenice koje imaju samo srednji rod:
- The table is 500 euros. It is expensive.
- The dog is 10 kilos. It is heavy.
- The female dog is 10 kilos. She is heavy.
*We can use they as a neutral third person singular pronoun when we don’t know or don’t want to reveal someone’s gender.
Use
Imenice u muškom i ženskom rodu koristimo za ljude, a u srednjem za stvari, životinje, događaje, tvari i pojave.
Summary
Imenice [nouns] imaju tri roda [genders]: muški, ženski i srednji. Obično koristimo he i she za ljude, dok se it koristi za stvari ili životinje (možemo upotrijebiti he ili she za domaće životinje).
Naprimjer:
— “My father doesn’t eat meat. He is a vegetarian.” = He koristimo jer je imenica otac muškog roda.
— “My mother doesn’t eat meat. She is a vegetarian.” = She koristimo jer je imenica majka ženskog roda.
— “My parents don’t eat meat. They are vegetarian.” = They koristimo jer imenica roditelji podrazumijeva i muški i ženski rod (majka i otac).
— “The cat sleeps during the day. It is so cute.”/“The female cat sleeps during the day. She is so cute.” = Koristimo it ili she jer govorimo o domaćoj životinji ženskog roda.
