Introduction

Los pronombres [pronouns] son palabras utilizadas para evitar repeticiones de un sustantivo {ver Pronombres Personales de Subjeto, Nivel A1}.

Usamos los pronombres retivos [relative pronouns] para introducir las cláusulas relativas. Hacen referencia a personas o cosas al reemplazar el sujeto expresado en la cláusula principal para evitar su repetición en la cláusula relativa {ver Pronombres Relativos, Nivel A1}.

Form

Otros pronombres relativos de personas y cosas son whomwhose, whomever, whoever y whichever.

Example

Whom

  • I called the salesman from whom I bought this watch.
  • This is the woman to whom I wanted to speak.
  • The people, for whom they were waiting, have arrived.

Whose

  • Helen, whose father is a baker, lives in an industrial city.
  • This is the painter whose statue is in the main square of the city.
  • This is my cousin whose clothes shop has the most expensive clothes.

Whoever

  • Whoever was there I don’t care.
  • She’s a kind woman, whoever her friends might be.
  • Hana, whoever comes to the party we have enough cake.

Whomever

  • We will accept in our team whomever you recommend.
  • Give the gifts to whomever you have missed.
  • He will invite whomever we decide in our last week here.

Whichever

  • May I go to whichever theater I want?
  • Pick whichever picture you woud like to edit.
  • I will drink whichever wine you buy.

Use

Usamos los pronombres relativos para identificar personas y cosas y añadir información secundaria sobre ellos. whomwhose para introducir las cláusulas relativas. Usamos:

  • Whom para descubrir qué persona recibe una acción;
  • Whose para descubrir qué persona posee algo;
  • Whoever para referirnos a un sujeto cuándo no importa quién es;
  • Whomever para referirnos a un objeto cuándo no importa cual es;
  • Whichever para referirnos a algo, no importa qué.

Summary

Usamos los pronombres relativos [relative pronouns] para evitar la repetición de sujeto de la cláusula principal en la cláusula relativa. Ambos se refieren a personas y van después de sustantivos.

Los pronombres relativos más comunes son: whom (objeto) se usa para personas, whose para posesión, whoever (sujeto) cuando no importa quién es el sujeto, whomever (objeto) cuando no importa quién es el objeto, whichever cuándo no importa la cosa a la que nos referimos.

Por ejemplo:
— «I am dating the girl whom I met at the restaurant.» = Whom se refiere a girl.
— «The girl, whose brother owns this restaurant, is Italian.» = Whose se refiere a girl.
