Introduction

The dot mark has got three names (a dot, a full stop, a point) and several usages according to each subtype.
Here we are only focusing on the usage of the full stop only.

Form

The mark ‘.‘ has different names, according to where it is used.

  • Dot
  • Point
  • Full stop

In this section, we are only speaking about the full stop.

Example

  • in the same paragraph:
    • You might not understand the difference between personality and character. We are going to explain it in this chapter.
  • separate different paragraphs:
    • I enjoy our school life, so I am happy to go there every day. 
      I disagree because I do not have fun at school.
  • to finish the text:
    • ...and they lived happily ever after.
  • in conversations
    • I won’t do it, full stop.

Use

Generally, we use a full stop to indicate the end of a sentence when it is not a question or an exclamation. More specifically, the full stop is used:

  • inside a paragraph: when the topic of the sentences is the same but the ideas have different connotations.
  • to separate two paragraphs when the content has different topics
  • to finish the text completely: nothing is written after the full stop.

In a different context, the term “full stop” is used in conversations when you don’t want to speak anymore about an issue. It is a way of finishing the conversation.
