INTRODUCTION

The colon is a punctuation mark composed by two dots in a vertical line.

FORM

EXAMPLE

  1. to put emphasis
    • You know what you should do now: study.
    • He received what he wanted: a pair of warm socks.
    • David has always wanted to do one thing: to move out.
  2. In direct speech
    • She said: ‘I don’t want you to act like this when the children are around.’
    • The teacher said: ‘Close your books.’
    • My boss explained: ‘You have to follow the rules.’

USE

We use the colon:

  1.  to put emphasis
  2. In direct speech
