Adverbs of place

Introduction
Adverbs [adverbios] modify a verb, adjective, or another adverb in a sentence.
Adverbs of place [adverbios de lugar] give specific information about the place where an action occurs.
Form
Adverbs of place have no fixed position in the sentence: can be placed before or after the verb, depending on what is emphasized.
Some adverbs of place are: aquí*, ahí, allí, cerca, lejos…
The adverbs cerca and lejos can be intensified: muy lejos, muy cerca…
NOTE: Adverbs do not vary in gender and number.
* Aquí usually comes at the end of the sentence but can also come at the beginning for emphasis.
Example
- Aquí está el lápiz que me prestaste;
- Según el mapa, la biblioteca está por ahí;
- Cuando tú sales a la pizarra, yo vengo de allí;
- No me copies el examen que el profesor anda cerca;
- Alcánzame la goma de borrar, que estoy muy lejos.
Use
Adverbs of place are used to:
- provide information about the circumstances of the place where the actions take place;
- answer the questions: ¿Dónde?, ¿Adónde? y ¿Desde dónde?
The main adverbs of place have the following uses:
- aquí: place where the speaker is located or close to it;
- ahí: an area where the listener is located or close to him/her;
- allí: a place far away from both the speaker and the listener;
- cerca: close in space or time;
- lejos: a great distance in space or time.
Summary
Adverbs of place are used to specify the location where the action takes place. In Spanish, some are always placed before the verb, and others are placed before the adjective.
The most important ones are: aquí, ahí, allí, cerca, lejos…
For example:
— «Voy a sentarme cerca de ti»;
— «Allí no hay nadie».
