Introduction

Adverbs are expressions that function as modifiers of other elements in the clause. They can provide a wide range of information.

Adverbs of place provide information about the place of an action.

Form

Adverbs of place are not used as modifiers of another adjective or an adverb. In the sentence they come after objects or verbs.

The most commonly used are: here, there, downstairs, upstairs, inside, outside, indoors, outdoors, anywhere, abroad

Example

  • A packet of flour was here yesterday.
  • He was there at the bar 2 minutes before.
  • The drinks are downstairs.
  • They are sitting upstairs.
  • I stay inside and have a warm meal when the weather is bad.
  • Everybody is outside.
  • Stay indoors and don’t ask questions.
  • We stayed outdoors all afternoon. 
  • You are not going anywhere. 
  • They sometimes go abroad on business.

Use

We use adverbs of place to give information about the location of the action described in the sentence.

For example:
— “Are you looking for a vegetarian sandwich? It’s here.” = We use here to express the position of something (at this point).
