Introduction
Местоимения [pronouns] — это слова, которые используются, чтобы избежать повторений существительного {смотреть Личные местоимения, уровень A1}.
Относительные местоимения [relative pronouns] используются для введения относительных предложений. Они относятся к людям или вещам, заменяя субъект главной части предложения, чтобы избежать его повторения в относительном предложении {смотреть Относительные местоимения, уровень A1}.
Form
Относительные местоимения where и when используются после существительных.
Example
Where
- This is the shopping centre where I bought a gift for my mom.
- It is the butcher’s where my brother worked.
- This is the hotel where we stayed during our trip.
When
- I can’t forget the day when my dad opened our bakery.
- The winter when I started working as a shop assistant was cold.
- The day when the hairdresser died was my birthday.
Wherever
- Wherever you go, I’ll be there for you.
- We can have dinner wherever you want, but not in that restaurant.
- I am ready to study wherever my parents decide.
Whenever
- Whenever you need me, I am ready to come.
- You can read it today or whenever.
- Whenever the boss calls, she is busy.
Use
Where и when используются для введения относительной части предложения. Используются:
- Where, чтобы определить описанное в предложении место действия;
- When, чтобы выяснить в какое время происходит описаное в предлодении действие.
Summary
Относительные местоимения [relative pronouns] where (место) and when (время) используются, чтобы начать относительную часто предложения, а также, чтобы избежать повторение субъекта главной части предложения в относительной. Эти слова используются перед существительными.
Например:
— “I work in London, where 8 million people live.” = Where относится к Лондону (месту).
— “I worked in London last summer, when you were in the countryside.” = When относится к времени работы в Лондоне (время).
