Introduction

How many is used to ask questions about the quantity of a countable noun.

How much is used to ask questions about the quantity of an uncountable noun.

Form

The interrogative form How many and How much can be use:

  • When asking how many? we always use the plural of the noun in the question:
    How many + countable noun + …?
  • When asking how much? we always use the singular of the noun in the question:
    How much + uncountable noun + …?

Example

  • How many offices does the company have?
  • How many holidayhave you been on?
  • How many students are hard workers?
  • How many languages do you speak?
  • How much space is on the computer?
  • How much money do I need for the holidays?
  • How much time will it take?
  • How much sugar does fruit contain?

Use

We use the interrogative form how many? with countable nouns and the interrogative form how much? with uncountable nouns to find out the amount, quantity or measure of an object.

Summary

We use how many…? with countable nouns, only in the plural form, to find out the amount, quantity or measure of an object.

We use how much? with uncountable nouns, only in the singular form, to find out the amount, quantity or measure of an object.

For example:
— “How many hours do you need to park the car?” = We use how many…? because hours are countable.
— “How much time do you need to park the car?” = We use how much…? because time is uncountable.

NOTE: When asking how many…? we always use the plural of a noun in the question. We can use how much? to find out the price.
