Introduction

Kata kerja modal [modal verb] adalah kata kerja yang tidak memiliki arti tersendiri, namun dapat mengubah kata kerja utama, mengganti arti kata tersebut dan memberikan informasi lanjut mengenai suatu tindakan.

Would termasuk kata kerja modal yang digunakan untuk mengekspresikan suatu kemauan di masa lampau, permintaan secara sopan, preferensi/keinginan, tawaran dan ajakan.

Form

Kata would digunakan sebagai kata kerja modal dan memiliki tiga bentuk:

Afirmatif

Struktur dalam bentuk afirmatif adalah:
Subject + would + verb + …

  • Bentuk singkat dari would adalah ‘d.

Negatif

Struktur dalam bentuk negatif adalah:
Subject + would + not + verb + …

  • Bentuk singkat untuk format negatif adalah wouldn’t.

Interogatif

Struktur dalam bentuk interogatif adalah:

Example

  1. Kemauan di masa lampau
    • She would play the piano
    • She wouldn’t play the piano.
    • Would she play the piano?
  2. Permintaan sopan
    • Wouldy ou open the window, please?
  3. Preferensi/keinginan
    • I would like to have some coffee. 
  4. Tawaran dan ajakan
    • Would you come to my party?

Use

Kita menggunakan would untuk mengekspresikan:

  1. Kemauan di masa lampau: kesediaan melakukan sesuatu di waktu yang lalu;
  2. Permintaan sopan: untuk meminta secara sopan;
  3. Preferensi/keinginan: untuk membicarakan preferensi atau keinginan;
  4. Tawaran dan undangan: untuk menawarkan sesuatu atau mengundang seseorang.

Summary

Kata kerja modal [modal verb] would mengekspresikan kemauan di masa lampau, permintaan sopan, preferensi/keinginan, tawaran dan ajakan.

Strukturnya adalah:

  • Afirmatif: Subject + would + verb + …
  • Negatif: Subject + would + not + verb + …
  • Interogatif: Would + subject + verb + …?

Contoh:
— Afirmatif: “She would play the piano.”
— Negatif: “She wouldn’t play the piano.”
— Interogatif: “Would she play the piano?”

CATATAN: Penulisannya selalu sama, termasuk untuk orang ketiga tunggal.
