Introduction

El verbo to be es esencial en la gramática. Es un verbo auxiliar y es uno de los verbos irregulares.

Para expresar situaciones que ocurrieron en el pasado y que han terminado, usamos el tiempo pasado [past tense] del verbo.

Form

El verbo to be es uno de los verbos con una forma irregular del tiempo pasado.

Afirmativo

Su estructura en afirmativo es:

Subject + to be (Past tense) + …

SUBJECT TO BE
I was
You were
He was
She was
It was
We were
You were
They were

Negativo

Su estructura en negativo es:

Subject + to be (Past tense) + not + …

  • En la forma negativa, no se usa el verbo auxiliar «did».
SUBJECT TO BE + NOT SHORT FORM
I was not wasn’t
You were not weren’t
He was not wasn’t
She was not wasn’t
It was not wasn’t
We were not weren’t
You were not weren’t
They were not weren’t

Interrogativo

Su estructura en interrogativo es:

To be (Past tense) + subject + …?

  • En la forma interrogativa no se usa el verbo auxiliar «did».
TO SUBJECT QUESTION MARK
Was I ?
Were you ?
Was he ?
Was she ?
Was it ?
Were we ?
Were you ?
Were they ?

Example

Afirmativo

  • was a good football player.
  • He was here 2 minutes ago.
  • We were at the beach earlier.

Negativo

  • wasn’t a good football player
  • He wasn’t here 2 minutes ago.
  • We weren’t at the beach earlier.

Interrogativo

  • Was I a good football player?
  • Was he here 2 minutes ago?
  • Were you at the beach earlier?

Use

Usamos el pasado simple de to be como un conector entre el sujeto y un complemento o adjetivo. Da más información sobre el sujeto en el pasado.

Summary

Usamos el pasado simple [past simple] para expresar situaciones que ocurrieron en el pasado y han terminado ahora. El verbo to be tiene una forma irregular del pasado.

  • Afirmativo: Empezamos con el sujeto seguido por to be en pasado:
    was, you were, he was, she was, it was, we were, you were and they were.
  • Negativo: Empezamos con el sujeto seguido por to be en pasado y not:
    was not, you were not, he was not, she was not, it was not, we were not, you were not and they were not.
  • Interrogativo: Empezamos con to be en pasado seguido por el sujeto (la oración termina con un signo de interrogación.
    was I…?were you…?was he…?was she…?was it…?were we…?were you…? and were they…?.

Por ejemplo:
— Afirmativo: «The sugar was enough for the cake
— Negativo: «The sugar wasn’t enough for the cake
— Interrogativo: «Was the sugar enough for the cake?»
