Introduction
I pronomi [pronouns] sono parole usate per evitare le ripetizioni di un sostantivo {vedi Pronomi – Soggetto, livello A1}.
I pronomi relativi [relative pronouns] vegono usati per introdurre le preposizioni relative. Si riferiscono allo spazio e al tempo sostituendo il soggetto della preposizione principale ed evitando la ripetizione nella relativa. {vedi Pronomi- Relative, livello A1}.
Form
I pronomi relativi where e when vengono posti dopo i sostantivi.
Example
Where
- This is the shopping centre where I bought a gift for my mom.
- It is the butcher’s where my brother worked.
- This is the hotel where we stayed during our trip.
When
- I can’t forget the day when my dad opened our bakery.
- The winter when I started working as a shop assistant was cold.
- The day when the hairdresser died was my birthday.
Use
Where e when vengono usati per introdurre le preposizioni relative. Usiamo:
- Where per riferirci al luogo dell’azione descritta nella frase;
- When per riferirci al tempo dell’azione descritta nella frase.
Summary
I pronomi relativi where (spazio) e when (tempo) sono usati per introdurre le preposizioni relative ed evitare di ripetere il soggetto della frase principale nella relativa. Vengono posti prima dei nomi.
Per esempio:
— “I work in London, where 8 million people live.” = Where si riferisce a Londra (luogo).
— “I worked in London last summer, when you were in the countryside.” = When si riferisce al periodo di lavoro a Londra (tempo).
