Introduction
Los números ordinales [ordinal numbers] expresan secuencias numéricas, colocando elementos en una lista.
Form
Los números ordinales son precedidos por el artículo definido the y se normalmente colocan después del verbo.
Los números ordinales se forman al añadir -th* a los números cardinales [cardinal numbers] (1 – 10):
- 1st* – First
- 2nd* – Second
- 3rd* – Third
- 4th – Fourth
- 5th* – Fifth
- 6th – Sixth
- 7th – Seventh
- 8th* – Eighth
- 9th* – Ninth
- 10th – Tenth
*Las excepciones (también twelve = twelfth).
Example
- He was the first on the list./ He was the 1st on the list.
- It’s my second time in Sweden. / It’s my 2nd time in Sweden.
- I want the third cake. / I want the 3rd cake.
Use
Usamos números ordinales para mostrar la posición de algo en una secuencia.
A diferencia de los números cardinales, que se utilizan para expresar la cantidad de algo, los ordinales expresan secuencias numéricas.

Por ejemplo:
— «It’s my fifth time in Spain.» = Esto es el número actual de veces que he visitado España y estoy allí ahora (fifth = número ordinal).
♦ «I’ve been to Spain five times.» = El número total de veces que he visitado España y ya no estoy allí. (five = número cardinal).
NOTA: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9 y 12 son excepciones (porque sus números ordinales no siguen la norma general de formación: first, second, third, fifth, eighth, ninth y twelfth).
