Introduction
Present perfect digunakan untuk menggambarkan suatu tindakan yang telah dilakukan di masa lampau, namun masih berhubungan dengan masa kini dan dampaknya terasa hingga sekarang {lihat Present Perfect, Level A2}.
Past simple digunakan untuk menggambarkan situasi yang terjadi di masa lampau dan telah berakhir {lihat Past Simple, Level A1}.
Present perfect dan Past simple berbeda dalam bentuk dan fungsi.
Form
Present perfect dan Past simple memiliki struktur berbeda untuk tiga format.
Format afirmatif:
- Present perfect: Subject + have/has + past participle + …
- Past simple: Subject + Verb (Past tense) + …
Format negatif:
- Present perfect: Subject + have/has + not + past participle + …
- Past simple: Subject + did + not + verb + …
Format interogatif:
- Present perfect: Have/Has + subject + past participle + …?
- Past simple: Did + subject + verb + …?
Example
Present perfect
- I have lived in Chicago for 10 years, I still live in Chicago.
- She hasn’t played the piano in 3 years (the last time was 3 years ago).
- Have they lived together for a year (they are still together)?
Past simple
- I lived in Chicago for 10 years, now I live in San Diego.
- She didn’t play the piano for 3 years, but she started playing again this week.
- Did they live together for a year (they are not together anymore)?
Use
Kita menggunakan present perfect untuk menjelaskan suatu tindakan atau peristiwa panjang/singkat di masa lampau yang membawa dampak ke masa kini, dengan keterangan waktu sekarang (this month, today, this year…).
Kita menggunakan past simple untuk menjelaskan tindakan atau peristiwa panjang/singkat yang terjadi berulang kali atau merupakan suatu kebiasaan di masa lampau, dengan keterangan waktu lampau (two weeks ago, last year, in 2010, yesterday…).
Summary
Present perfect dan past simple berbeda dalam fungsi dan bentuk.
Contoh:
— “I have been to the cinema four times this month.” = Kita menggunakan to be dalam present perfect untuk menjelaskan bahwa si pembicara telah melakukan suatu tindakan dalam kurun waktu tertentu dan masih belum selesai (this month : bulan ini).
— “I went to the cinema four times last month.” = Kita menggunakan to go dalam past simple untuk menjelaskan bahwa si pembicara telah selesai melakukan tindakan tersebut di waktu lampau (last month : bulan lalu).
