Yes or No Questions

Introduction
Le yes/no questions vengono anche chiamate domande chiuse [closed questions] o domande polari [polar questions] perché la risposta può essere solo si [yes] o no [no].
Le risposte a queste domande vengono chiamate risposte brevi [short answers].
Form
Per formare le domande chiuse si possono usare solo gli ausiliari (be, have, do) o i verbi modali (can, could, would…).
Le yes/no questions hanno questa struttura:
Auxiliary/modal verb + subject + noun/verb + …?
Di solito l’ausiliare o il verbo modale si ripete nella risposta breve (non é necessario ripetere il verbo).
Le risposte brevi hanno questa struttura:
Yes/no + , + subject + auxiliary/modal verb (la stessa della domanda)

Example
- Do you like the president? – Yes, I do. /
Yes, I like. – No, I don’t. - Did she go to the hospital? – Yes, she did. – No, she didn’t.
- Were you at church today? – Yes, we were. – No, we weren’t.
Use
Usiamo le domande chiuse quando ci aspettiamo che la risposta sia si (affermativa) o no (negativa).
Summary
Alle domande chiuse [yes/no questions] si può rispondere solo con si o no.
La struttura di una domanda chiusa è:
Auxiliary/modal verb + subject + noun/verb + …?
Le riposte brevi hanno la struttura:
Yes/no + , + subject + auxiliary/modal verb (la stessa della domanda).
Per esempio:
— “Do you like cats? -Yes, I do.” = Le yes/no questions vengono chiamate anche domande chiuse e dato che la domanda è stata posta con il verbo to do, la risposta breve avrà lo stesso verbo.
♦ “Whose cat is this?” = Wh- questions sono anche chiamate domande aperte [open questions] perché a queste si possono dare un numero infinito di risposte.
NOTE: Possiamo solo usare un verbo ausiliare (be/have…) o un modale (can/could /would.…) per creare delle Yes/no question.
