Introduction
Un verbe modal [modal verb] est un auxiliaire (une aide) qui n’a pas de sens propre mais qui modifie le verbe principal en changeant son sens et en donnant plus de détails sur l’action.
May est un verbe modal qui exprime la possibilité qu’une chose se passe. Il sert aussi à demander une permission.
Form
May ne change jamais, même à la troisième personne du singulier. Il existe sous trois formes.
Forme affirmative
Voici sa structure à la forme affirmative :

Forme affirmative
Quand on n’est pas sûr de quelque chose
- I’m afraid I may be late.
- Susana may come to see you tomorrow.
- There may be too many people at the post office.
Donner ou demander une permission
- You may take this plate.
- She may answer the phone.
- They may travel by plane.
Exprimer un souhait ou un espoir
- May the force be with you.
- May you both be happy together.
- May we have rain this year.
Forme négative
- You may not answer the phone call!
- She may not leave a message.
- I’m afraid that we may not interview the director.
Forme interrogative
- May I answer an important phone call?
- May she leave you a message?
- May we interview the director?
Use
On utilise may à la forme affirmative quand :
- On n’est pas sûr de quelque chose ;
- On demande ou donne une permission ;
- On exprime un souhait ou un espoir.
À la forme négative, may exprime un refus de permission, l’interdiction ou l’incertitude.
À la forme interrogative, may sert à formuler une demande polie.
Summary
Le verbe modal [modal verb] may exprime la permission, la possibilité que quelque chose arrive, un souhait ou un espoir. La forme négative de may sert à exprimer l’interdiction, l’incertitude ou le refus d’une permission. La forme interrogative sert à formuler une demande polie.
On peut l’utiliser sous trois formes :
- Forme affirmative : On commence par le sujet, suivi de may puis du verbe.
- Forme négative : On commence par le sujet, suivi de may not puis du verbe.
- Forme interrogative : On commence par may, suivi du sujet puis du verbe (la phrase se termine par un point d’interrogation).
Par exemple :
— Forme négative : « It may not snow this winter. » = On utilise may pour indiquer une probabilité incertaine.
— Forme interrogative : « May it snow this winter? » = On utilise may pour confirmer une légère possibilité.
