Introduction
Modalni glagol [modal verb] je vrsta pomoćnog glagola koji sam nema značenje, ali može oblikovati glavni glagol tako da mu mijenja značenje i daje više informacija o njegovoj radnji.
Should je modalni glagol koji je koristi za izricanje obaveza ili dužnosti kroz savjete ili preporuke.
Form
Should je uvijek isti, čak i u trećem licu jednine. Dolazi u tri oblika:
Affirmative
Struktura u potvrdnom obliku:
Subject + should + verb + …

Example
- Slabija obaveza ili dužnost
- I should never be late to school again!
- He shouldn’t talk to his classmates during the exam.
- We should always wear a seat belts whilst driving a car.
- Savjet (preporuka)
- You should be quiet when you visit a public library.
- She shouldn’t revise the parts that are not to be examined.
- Should we memorise this rule?
Use
Should nema toliku jačinu kao must. Should koristimo kad:
- Ukazujemo na slabiju obavezu ili dužnost;
- Dajemo ili pitamo za savjet (preporuku).
Summary
Modalni glagol should koristi se za izricanje slabijih obaveza, dužnosti. Nema toliko snažno značenje kao must.
Struktura:
- Potvrdni oblik: Subject + should + verb + …
- Negativni oblik: Subject + should + not + verb + …
- Upitni oblik: Should + subject + verb + …?
Naprimjer:
— Potvrdni oblik: “You should do your homework to understand the subject.” = Should se koristi za davanje prijateljskih savjeta.
— Negativni oblik: “You shouldn´t do your homework to understand the subject.” = Shouldn’t se koristi za davanje prijateljskih savjeta.
— Upitni oblik: “Should you do your homework to understand the subject?” = Should…? se koristi za potvrdu savjeta.
♦ “You must do your homework or you will fail the class.” = Must izriče snažniju obavezu.
