Introduction
Iragan jarraia (edo progresiboa) iraganean gertatutako eta edozein momentutan periodo batetan zehar aurrera dabilen egoera bat adierazteko erabiltzen den aditz forma da.
Galdera forman erabiltzean, aditzak zerbait iraganaren periodo denbora batean gertatzen zebilenari buruz galdetzen du.
Form
Iragan jarraitua, galdera forman, hurrengo egitura dauka:
Was/Were + subject + [verb + -ing] + …?
- Was/were: to be aditzaren iragan sinplea.

Iraganeko debora zehatz batean gertatzen dabilen gertaera
- Was I running in the park at 9 o’clock?
- Was she practising sport when I called her at 11:45?
- Were they still watching TV when she returned from work at 7 o’clock?
Denbora betez aurrera doan ekintza etengabea
- Was I running?
- Was he crossing the road?
- Were we watching TV during our break?
Denbora periodo baten luzeera iraganean.
- Was I working in the bakery on the opposite road last summer?
- Was she practising sport every day last year to prepare for the race?
- Were they watching TV all day when they were teenagers?
Aldibereko iragan ekintzak
- Was I running while she was walking?
- Was she practising sport while her mother was cooking?
- Were we talking while the kids were watching TV?
Iraganean gertatutako ekintza sekuentziak
- Were the kids playing on the grass, their parents sitting on the fence and teenagers running when you went to the park?
- Was her mother working on the laptop, her father watching TV and her sister studying when she went home?
- Were the patients reading magazines, talking on the phone and was the secretary typing anything on the computer while you were waiting at the doctor today?
Ekintza errepikatuak edo gogainkarriak (always-ekin)
- Was I always going late to class?
- Was she doing sport everyday for years to become a good athlete?
- Were they always watching TV on high volume late at night?
Use
Iragan jarraitua, baiezko forman, hurrengoari buruz galdetzeko erabiltzen dugu:
- Azpi ekintza luzea ekintza laburrago batez moztuta dagoena (zerbait bat-batean gertatzen dela beste ekintza luzeago bat aurrera doan bitartean);
- Iraganeko debora zehatz batean gertatzen dabilen gertaera (iraganean oraindik progresuan dagoen gertaera baten data, ordua edo denbora espezifikoari buruzko informazioa adierazteko);
- Denbora betez aurrera doan ekintza etengabea (denbora periodo luze batez aurrera doan ekintza bat iraganean);
- Denbora periodo baten luzeera iraganean (denbora periodo luze batez aurrera doan ekintza bat iraganean);
- Aldibereko iragan ekintzak (bi gertaera aldiberean gertatzean);
- Iraganean gertatutako ekintza sekuentziak (gertaera bat baino gehiago denbora berean gertatzen dabilen egoera bat deskribatzeko erabiltzen dira);
- Ekintza errepikatuak edo gogainkarriak (always-ekin edo espresio antzekoekin ekintza errepikatuen ideia adierazten dituztenak).

Iragan jarraia [past continuous] galdera forman erabiltzean, was edo were-ekin hasten gara gehi subjektua eta -ing aditza ondoren (esaldietan galdera marka bat jartzen da atzean)
Adibidez:
— “Was I playing football when the phone rang?” = Iragan jarraia [past continuous] erabiltzen dugu zerbait moztuta egon bazen telefonoa entzutean galdetzeko.
♦ “Did I play football?” = Iragan sinplea [past simple] erabiltzen dugu iraganean hasi eta amaitu den ekintza baten ideia bati buruz galdetzeko.
