Introduction
Glagol biti [to be] je pomožni glagol, ki je v slovnici nepogrešljiv.
Ko je v nikalni obliki, zanika nekaj glede osebka.

Glagol to be uporabljamo s:
- Samostalniki
- I am not a student.
- He is not a lawyer.
- We are not doctors.
- Pridevniki
- I am not tall.
- He is not polite.
- Many people are not happy.
- Predložnimi zvezami (ali dopolnili)
- My book is not on the bed.
- Harry Potter is not on the TV.
- The eggs are not in the box.
Glagol to be v nikalni obliki lahko uporabljamo tudi s kratkimi oblikami:
- You aren’t 12 years old.
- This coat isn’t $100.
- Standard double beds aren’t 5 feet wide.
Use
Glagol to be ima zelo osnovno strukturo; ko ga uporabljamo kot povezovalno besedo med drugimi besednimi vrstami (osebki, samostalniki, pridevniki, dopolnili…), nam sporoča več podrobnosti o stanju osebka.
Glagol to be se uporablja s:
- Samostalniki;
- Pridevniki;
- Predložnimi zvezami (ali dopolnili).
Glagol to be se v nikalni obliki uporablja za zanikanje značilnosti osebka, kot so na primer: starost, obnašanje, barva, poklic, nacionalnosst, osebnost, kraj, kvaliteta, velikost, čas…
Summary
Glagol biti [to be] je eden od najpogosteje rabljenih pomožnih glagolov. Pogosto ga uporabljamo s samostalniki, pridevniki in predložnimi zvezami. V nikalni obliki zanika značilnosti osebka.
Struktura je:
Subject + to be + not + …
Nikalna oblika: (I) am not, (you) are not, (he/she/it) is not, (we/you/they) are not.
Na primer:
— “I am not tall.” = Am not uporabljamo v prvi osebi ednine.
— “He is not tall.” = Is not uporabljamo v tretji osebi ednine.
— “They are not tall.” = Are not uporabljamo v množini.
NOTE: Kratko obliko uporabljamo v govorjenem jeziku ali pri neformalnem pisanju.
