Introduction

Modalni glagol [modal verb] je tip pomožnega glagola, ki sam po sebi nima pomena, ampak modificira glavni glagol, spreminja njegov pomen in dodaja podrobnosti o dejanju.

Should je tip pomožnih modalnih glagolov, ki jih uporabljamo za izražanje obveze in dolžnosti preko nasvetov ali priporočil.

Form

Should ima vedno enako obliko, celo v tretji osebi ednine, in to strukturo najdemo v treh oblikah.

Affirmative

Njegova struktura v trdilni obliki je:
Subject + should + verb + …

Subject should Verb
I/You should work
He/She/It should work
We/You/They should work

Negative

Njegova struktura v nikalni obliki je:
Subject + should + not + verb + …

  • Kratka verzija nikalne oblike je: shouldn’t.
Subject should + not Verb
I/You should not work
He/She/It should not work
We/You/They should not work

Interrogative

Njegova struktura v vprašalni obliki je:
Should + subject + verb + …?

Example

Šibkejša obveza/dolžnost

  • I should never be late to school again!
  • He shouldn’t talk to his classmates during the exam.
  • We should always wear a seat belts whilst driving a car.

Nasvet (priporočilo)

  • You should be quiet when you visit a public library.
  • She shouldn’t revise the parts that are not to be examined.
  • Should we memorise this rule?

Use

Should lahko dojemamo kot šibkejšega od must. Should uporabljamo, ko:

  1. Prikazujemo šibkejšo obvezo ali dolžnost;
  2. Dajemo in sprašujemo za nasvete (priporočila).

Summary

Modalni glagol [modal verb] should izraža šibkejšo obvezo ali nasvet. Lahko ga dojemamo kot šibkejšega od must.

Strukture so:

  • Trdilna: Subject + should + verb + …
  • Nikalna: Subject + should + not + verb + …
  • Vprašalna: Should + subject + verb + …?

Na primer:
— Trdilna: “You should do your homework to understand the subject.” = Should uporabljamo za dajanje nasvetov na prijazen način.
— Nikalna: “You shouldn´t do your homework to understand the subject.” = Shouldn’t uporabljamo za dajanje nasvetov na prijazen način.
— Vprašalna: Should you do your homework to understand the subject?” = Should? uporabljamo za spraševanje po potrditvi nasveta.
♦ “You must do your homework or you will fail the class.” = Must izraža strožjo obvezo.
