Introduction

Dopełniacz [possessive case] że coś należy do kogoś. Używamy go do wyrażania własności oraz przynależności. Możemy go nawet użyć żeby pokazać, że jedna rzecz należy do drugiej.

Form

Dopełniacz możemy utworzyć na trzy sposoby:

  • Liczba pojedyncza – dodajemy apostrof oraz s (’s) do rzeczowników w liczbie pojedynczej: cat⇒cat’s;
  • Liczba mnoga – dodajemy apostrof (’) do rzeczowników regularnych w liczbie mnogiej:
    cats ⇒cats’;
  • Nieregularna liczba mnoga – dodajemy apostrof oraz s (’s) do rzeczowników nieregularnych w liczbie mnogiej: people⇒people’s.

Example

  • Liczba pojedyncza:
    • This is my sister’s room (one sister).
    • You can find my friend’s number here (one friend).
  • Liczba mnoga:
    • This is my sisters’ room (two sisters or more).
    • You can find my friends’ numbers here (two friends or more).
  • Nieregularna liczba mnoga:
    • These children’s mobile phones are missing (two children or more).
    • She took these women’s phone numbers (two women or more).

Use

Dopełniacz służy do wyrażania relacji przynależności. Używamy go do wyrażania własności oraz przynależności, a także do opisu relacji oraz cech fizycznych.

Dopełniacz służy do mówienia o fakcie należenia czegoś do kogoś.a także do opisu relacji oraz cech fizycznych.

Na przykład:
— Singular nouns: „The cat’s ball is on the sofa.” = Cat to liczba pojedyncza a więc dodajemy (-’s) (The ball belongs to one cat).
— Plural nouns: „The cats’ ball is on the sofa.” = Cats to liczba mnoga więc dodajemy (’) (The ball belongs to more than one cat).
— Irregular plural nouns: „The children’s ball is on the sofa.” = Children to nieregularna liczba mnoga więc dodajemy (-’s).
