Introduction
Vrstni števniki [ordinal numbers] izražajo številčno zaporednost, elemente z njihovo pomočjo postavljamo na sezname.
Form
Pred vrstnimi števniki ponavadi stoji določni člen the; navadno konstrukcija stoji za glagolom. Vrstne števnike tvorimo tako, da glavnim števnikom (1 – 10) dodamo -th*:
- 1st* – First
- 2nd* – Second
- 3rd* – Third
- 4th – Fourth
- 5th* – Fifth
- 6th – Sixth
- 7th – Seventh
- 8th* – Eighth
- 9th* – Ninth
- 10th – Tenth
*Izjeme (tudi twelve = twelfth).
Example
- It’s my second time in Sweden.
- He was the first on the list.
- Our house is the fourth on the left.
Use
Vrstne števnike uporabljamo, da pokažemo postavitev nečesa.
Za razliko od glavnih števnikov, ki jih uporabljamo za izražanje količine nečesa, vrstni števniki izražajo številčno zaporednost.
Summary
Vrstni števniki [ordinal numbers] se razlikujejo od glavnih števnikov po tem, da jih uporabljamo za postavitev elementov na seznamu.
Vrstne števnike tvorimo tako, da glavnim števnikom dodamo -th: first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth in tenth.
Na primer:
— “It’s my fifth time in Spain.” = To je trenutno številov mojih obsikov Španije (fifth = vrstni števnik).
♦ “I’ve been to Spain five times.” = Skupno število mojih obiskov Španije (five = glavni števnik).
NOTE: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9 in 12 so izjeme (ker njihovi števniki ne sledijo splošnim pravilom tvorjenja: first, second, third, fifth, eighth, ninth in twelfth).
