Introduction

Spojky [conjunctions] sú slová, ktoré fungujú ako spojivo medzi rôznymi vetami alebo vetnými členmi.

Form

Spojky sú slová, ktoré spájajú slová, frázy a vety v súvetí.
Tými hlavnými spojkami sú: and, but, because a when.

Štruktúra súvetia má túto podobu:
Clause 1 + conjunctions + clause 2

Ak je súvetie dlhší, pred spojku umiestňujeme čiarku (,).

Example

And

  • Kevin reads the newspaper and watches television every Friday.
  • They live in New York and love its beautiful library.

But

  • I like maths lessons but I don’t really like history lessons.
  • You can go hiking there but you have to be very careful.

Because

  • Anna doesn’t want to take the exam because she did not study.
  • We can’t come to the party tonight because we must study.

When

  • You get very tired when you don’t sleep.
  • We came from school when nobody was home.

Use

Spojky používame, keď chceme spojiť slová, frázy, vety a súvetia a vyjadriť vzťahy medzi nimi.

Vety môžeme kombinovať rôznymi spôsobmi:

  • And [A]: spája dve vety dohromady;
  • But [Ale]: vyjadruje buď podmienku, alebo protiklad;
  • Because [Pretože]: vyjadruje dôvod, príčinu;
  • When [Keď/Až]: vyjadruje čas vety.

Napríklad:
— „I need to go to the supermarket and I also want to visit my grandmother.“ = And spája dve vety.
— „I need to go to the supermarket but I have to work.“ = But vyjadruje dej, ktorý je v protiklade k inému deji, ktorý prebieha v rovnakom čase.
— „I need to go to the supermarket because we have no bread.“ = Because spája dve časti vety: dej a príčinu deje.
